Glen Hansard, Oscar-winning Irish musician, dies at 56 in motorcycle crash

Glen Hansard, the Oscar-winning Irish singer-songwriter, actor, and frontman of the rock band The Frames, has died at the age of 56. According to Irish police, Hansard passed away early Wednesday morning, July 29, 2026, following a motorcycle crash in Lucan on the outskirts of Dublin. Emergency services treated Hansard at the scene, but he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Hansard first rose to prominence in the 1990s as the lead vocalist and guitarist for The Frames, which became one of Dublin's most influential indie rock acts. He achieved widespread international acclaim starring in the 2007 independent musical film Once, alongside Czech musician Markéta Irglová. The pair won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for their ballad "Falling Slowly," which went on to anchor a successful Broadway stage adaptation.

His death occurred just months after the release of two new live albums. In April 2026, Hansard released Don't Settle (Vol. 1 - Transmissions East), followed by Don't Settle (Vol. 2 - Transmissions West) in June. Both projects were recorded live in Berlin and featured re-recorded versions of songs spanning his career.

In what was his last known media interview in April 2026, Hansard had reflected on his age and his creative state. He spoke of being "very aware of time" at 56, and noted that while he felt in a creatively "fallow" period, he believed he was in "the middle of a good life."

Hansard is survived by his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their three-year-old son, Christy. Public tributes from colleagues across the international music and film communities began pouring in following the announcement of his death on Wednesday.
