Frankie Dettori remains in hospital for observation and scans following a severe car accident in Newmarket on the evening of Wednesday, 1 July. The 55-year-old champion jockey sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb in the collision, according to statements released by his representatives.

The incident occurred when Dettori's car was struck by another vehicle on the rear passenger side. The impact caused his car to spin and eventually flip, according to details provided by H Talent Management. Emergency services responded to the scene, and Dettori was subsequently transported to hospital for medical evaluation.

Representatives for the jockey have stated that his current focus is entirely on resting and recovering from the injuries sustained in the crash. His management company has publicly requested privacy for Dettori and his family while he remains under medical observation.

The accident comes just months after Dettori officially retired from professional race riding in February 2026. His competitive career concluded with a winning double in Brazil, which included a victory in the Group 1 Grande Premio Estado do Rio de Janeiro, marking the end of a decades-long tenure at the pinnacle of global horse racing.

The injuries now raise significant questions regarding his scheduled return to the saddle later this year. Dettori had been slated to participate in the Leger Legends charity race at Doncaster in September 2026. The event was intended to be his first ride in Britain since 2023, though his participation will now depend entirely on his recovery timeline.
