Counter-terrorism police lead investigation into the murder of Ann Widdecombe

Counter-terrorism officers have taken control of the investigation into the death of former government minister and Member of Parliament Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on July 9, 2026.

Joshua Kerry, 28, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on July 21, 2026, charged with her murder. Prosecutors alleged in court that Widdecombe, 78, was attacked at her home on July 8, 2026, suffering multiple blunt force injuries to the head. Kerry was remanded in custody following the hearing.

While initial police statements indicated there was no immediate information to suggest a political or terrorist motive, the investigation was subsequently transferred to counter-terrorism command. Officers are currently probing whether the attack was politically motivated.
