Ukrainian officials anticipate combined strikes following renewed aerial attacks and the targeting of a Russian weapons research institute.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russia is preparing a new large-scale attack on Ukraine, a statement followed swiftly by reported explosions in Kyiv on the evening of July 1. The developments come amid intensified aerial exchanges between the two nations and official warnings of potential combined attacks in the coming days.

Air defence systems were activated in the Ukrainian capital on Wednesday evening to counter incoming threats, according to local reports. This follows recent Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine that resulted in at least eight fatalities late last week, underscoring the sustained nature of the current aerial campaign.

In a parallel development on July 1, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency publicly designated Russia’s M. Stelmakh Polyus Research Institute as a legitimate military target. The facility, which develops laser and optoelectronic technologies for Russian weapon systems, had detailed information regarding its structure and personnel released by Ukrainian authorities.

The intelligence move follows a period of heavy reciprocal drone warfare. Earlier in the week, Russian authorities claimed to have intercepted 419 Ukrainian drones in a single night, including at least 46 directed toward Moscow. Ukrainian forces have concurrently reported strikes on Russian logistical hubs, bridges, and drone command posts.

The combination of explicit warnings from the Ukrainian presidency, renewed strikes on the capital, and the public targeting of specific Russian military-industrial facilities indicates a period of severe escalation in the ongoing conflict. As the volume of cross-border attacks increases, officials maintain that the situation remains highly fluid.
