U.S.-Iran ceasefire collapses as Trump and Khamenei exchange direct threats

U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei have exchanged direct threats of military action and retaliation, following the collapse of a short-lived bilateral ceasefire. Trump stated on July 11 that the United States would "completely decimate and destroy" Iran if the country attempted to assassinate him, amid reports that U.S. forces are planning military strikes.

The exchange comes after Trump described himself as Tehran's "number one target" and suggested a standing order for a U.S. military response, with Vice President JD Vance positioned to authorize strikes if necessary. The rhetoric from Washington follows the recent funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during which calls were made for Trump's assassination. In response, Mojtaba Khamenei has publicly pledged to seek revenge for his father's death.

The escalation coincides with the breakdown of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June 2026, which was intended to establish a ceasefire and a framework for peace talks. President Trump declared the agreement "over" in early July, citing renewed Iranian attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials dispute the U.S. characterization of the ceasefire's failure. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran has maintained its commitments under the June agreement. Instead, Araghchi accused the United States of violating the terms of the MoU, specifically regarding the implementation of sanctions waivers.

The rapid dissolution of the June diplomatic framework and the resumption of public threats between the two leaders mark a significant shift in posture. With military preparations reportedly underway and the Strait of Hormuz facing renewed instability, the recent developments indicate a severe escalation toward direct conflict between the United States and Iran.
