Police state the fatal weekend incident at the Salsa on St. Clair festival was a targeted exchange of gunfire rather than an active shooter event. Investigators are searching for suspects.

A shooting at a midtown Toronto street festival on Saturday evening left two men dead and four other people injured. The incident occurred on July 11 during the Salsa on St. Clair event, near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue.

Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo stated that the incident was not a random attack on the public. While there was initial concern of an active shooter situation among the crowds, investigators determined the violence was an exchange of gunfire between individuals targeting each other.

Both of the deceased victims were men. Authorities reported that one man died at the scene, while the second succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. Four additional individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation.

As of July 12, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. Police recovered two firearms from the scene and are continuing to investigate how many suspects were involved in the exchange.

The disruption of a heavily attended community event underscores the ongoing challenge of managing localized gun violence in crowded urban spaces. Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation into the exact sequence of events that led to the gunfire.
