The automatic excommunication of six bishops formalizes a profound rupture between Rome and the traditionalist Catholic group.

On July 2, 2026, the Vatican formally declared the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) to be in schism, issuing automatic excommunications for six bishops. The decree, issued by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, marks a definitive structural break between Rome and the traditionalist group following unauthorized episcopal consecrations.

The declaration immediately followed actions taken on July 1 at the SSPX headquarters in Écône, Switzerland. Despite a reported last-minute personal appeal from Pope Leo XIV to halt the proceedings, SSPX Bishops Alfonso de Galarreta and Bernard Fellay consecrated four new bishops: Michael Goldade, Marc Hanappier, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry, and Pascal Schreiber. In the eyes of the Vatican, proceeding with these consecrations without papal mandate triggered the severest canonical penalties.

The canonical consequences extend beyond the six bishops involved in the Écône ceremony. The Vatican decree stated that SSPX clergy are now in schism, rendering their sacraments of penance and marriage canonically invalid. Furthermore, the declaration warned that both clergy and lay faithful who formally adhere to the SSPX incur latae sententiae, or automatic, excommunication, fundamentally altering the ecclesiastical standing of thousands of traditionalist Catholics worldwide.

According to international reporting in the days following the decree, the SSPX has publicly dismissed the excommunications as objectively unjust and invalid. This formal separation concludes decades of complex, often strained dialogue between the Holy See and the Society, which was founded in 1970 in opposition to the modernizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

While the Vatican has outlined procedures for those wishing to return to full communion, emphasizing a continued desire for reconciliation, the immediate reality is one of profound institutional division. The formal declaration of schism and the resulting excommunications signify a painful fracture within the Church, establishing rigid ecclesiastical boundaries with lasting consequences for its clergy and faithful.
