Starbucks Korea just shuttered 2,160 stores for emergency sensitivity training after a historically disastrous marketing campaign. Here is what to drink while you rightfully refuse to give them your money.

Let’s be entirely honest: you only went to Starbucks for the convenience, not the beans. But now that Starbucks Korea has executed the most spectacular unforced PR error of the decade—launching a catastrophic "Tank Day" tumbler promotion that mocked South Korea's darkest historical tragedies, triggering police scrutiny and forcing the unprecedented early closure of 2,160 stores for mandatory sensitivity training—that convenience has abruptly evaporated. With sales plunging and a nationwide boycott quite rightfully emptying their cafes, your morning routine requires an immediate update. Let this be the moment you realise that replicating their signature iced vanilla latte at home is not just simple, it tastes vastly superior when it isn't steeped in corporate amnesia. Grab a glass; you won't miss the green siren.

Ingredients

  • 2 shots (60ml) of freshly pulled espresso (or very strongly brewed coffee, cooled)
  • 200ml whole milk (or a high-quality oat milk)
  • 1 tbsp premium vanilla syrup
  • A generous handful of large ice cubes

Method

  1. Fill a tall glass to the absolute brim with ice. Do not skimp; the slow dilution is a structural requirement of the drink, not a flaw.
  2. Pour the vanilla syrup directly over the ice, followed immediately by the cold milk, leaving about an inch of space at the top of the glass.
  3. Slowly pour the hot espresso over the milk to create that momentary, aesthetically pleasing brown-and-white cascade that a barista usually charges you heavily for.
  4. Stir vigorously with a long spoon until the glass is frosty to the touch and the liquid is a uniform, pale caramel colour.

Serve immediately, ideally from a glass that doesn't require a public apology from a corporate executive.
