Sony announces global closure of PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita by 2027
The phased shutdown of the legacy digital storefronts will begin in August 2026, reigniting debate over digital preservation and gaming history.

Sony has announced it is closing the PlayStation Store for new purchases on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles globally by July 2027. The phased shutdown will begin next month, in August 2026, across select markets including Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, before expanding to other territories.
According to the company's announcement, the decision stems from the inability of the older consoles to support modern commerce and payment processing systems. Sony stated that the closure is part of a broader strategic shift to direct resources toward its current-generation devices, primarily the PlayStation 5. While new transactions will be halted, users will retain the ability to download previously purchased content for what the company described as "the foreseeable future."
The impending closure has highlighted an industry-wide trend surrounding the lifespan of digital storefronts. Digital archivists and industry observers have characterized the move as a setback for media preservation, arguing that the systematic shutdown of legacy marketplaces threatens the permanent historical record of digital gaming.
Because physical production for these older platforms has long ended, the digital PlayStation Store remains the only official avenue to acquire a significant portion of their libraries. The removal of purchasing capabilities effectively severs access to hundreds of digital-only titles that have not been carried forward to newer hardware.
Following the initial August closures, the shutdown will expand to additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries later in 2026. By July 2027, the purchasing infrastructure for the PS3 and PS Vita will be fully deactivated worldwide, finalizing the commercial end of the platforms.
