A third major atmospheric heat dome is gathering strength over the central and southern United States, placing approximately 70 million people under active excessive heat advisories. This latest system, which forecasters warn could bring temperatures between 95 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit—with some localized areas potentially reaching 120 degrees—follows two previous significant heatwaves that impacted the country earlier this month. The pattern reflects a broader surge in extreme global temperatures that has severely affected public health, infrastructure, and seasonal events across the northern hemisphere.

The intense heat has already forced the cancellation of multiple public events, including several Independence Day celebrations in the eastern United States in early July. Public health and sports officials also raised concerns during the recently concluded FIFA World Cup matches in Philadelphia and Miami, where extreme heat presented dangerous conditions for athletes and spectators alike.

In Europe, successive extreme heatwaves since June have led to thousands of excess deaths. According to Public Health France, the country recorded at least 5,700 more deaths than normal during a historic heatwave in June, marking its highest excess mortality rate since 2003. Similar patterns of elevated mortality and medical emergencies have been reported across southern and central Europe as public services struggle to adapt to prolonged high temperatures.

The ongoing heatwaves have placed severe pressure on public infrastructure, resulting in transit delays, increased power outages due to high air conditioning demand, and strained healthcare systems. These conditions are disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. Additionally, reports from UN Women highlight that extreme heat events exacerbate socio-economic pressures, disproportionately affecting women and girls due to cultural norms and potentially increasing rates of violence, including domestic abuse.

Atmospheric scientists and climate researchers attribute the regularity and intensity of these extreme events directly to human-caused climate change. Studies analyzing recent temperature anomalies indicate that the severity of the current heatwaves would have been virtually impossible to reach without the influence of global warming.
