The FSB has detained a suspect accused of preparing an incendiary attack on transport infrastructure, allegedly under the direction of a handler in Syria.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Friday that it has prevented a planned attack on railway infrastructure in the southern city of Pyatigorsk. According to the agency, officers detained a suspect who was preparing to target a transport facility using an improvised incendiary device, acting on behalf of an international terrorist organisation.

The detained individual has been identified by authorities as a national of a Central Asian country. Reporting indicates that the suspect was not operating in isolation, but was allegedly receiving direct coordination and instructions from a handler located in Syria. The geographical distance between the orchestrator and the operative highlights a continued reliance on remote radicalisation and direction by international networks.

During a search of the suspect's residence, security personnel discovered ready-to-use incendiary devices, alongside communication equipment that officials state contained the handler's directives. Prior to the arrest, the individual had reportedly conducted photographic reconnaissance of the intended target site in the Stavropol region and acquired the necessary chemical components to manufacture incendiary bottles.

The thwarted plot in Pyatigorsk underscores a complex and persistent security challenge. International terrorist organisations continue to leverage foreign nationals and local sympathisers to destabilise critical infrastructure within Russia. Railways, which are inherently exposed and essential to the movement of both civilian goods and state resources, present a recurring focal point for these asymmetrical strategies.

A criminal investigation is now underway. Authorities have opened a case against the suspect under articles relating to the preparation of a terrorist act and participation in the activities of an organisation designated as terrorist under Russian law. Security services continue to investigate the wider network connected to the Syrian handler as the situation develops.
