The former ruler, who oversaw the rapid economic expansion of the modern Qatari state and abdicated in 2013, died Sunday at the age of 74. A period of national mourning is currently underway.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former ruler of Qatar who oversaw the nation's emergence as a global economic and diplomatic presence, died on Sunday at the age of 74. Known formally as the Father Emir, he was laid to rest at Lusail Cemetery as the state commenced a formal period of national mourning. Qatar’s Amiri Diwan directed that flags be flown at half-mast and public institutions suspend operations until July 19 to mark his passing.

During his time in power, Sheikh Hamad orchestrated a significant transformation of the Qatari state. Under his leadership, the nation leveraged its vast natural gas reserves to rapidly build out its infrastructure and economy. This period of expansion saw Qatar establish increased international influence, marked by the founding of the Al Jazeera media network and the campaign to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In 2013, he transferred power to his son, the current Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Following the transition, Sheikh Hamad maintained the title of Father Emir, remaining a central figure in the country's national identity while stepping back from day-to-day governance.

The announcement of his death has prompted an immediate response from the international community. Regional and global leaders, including King Abdullah II of Jordan and King Charles of the United Kingdom, have formally extended their condolences to Sheikh Tamim and the Al Thani family. The breadth of the diplomatic response reflects the alliances and foreign policy networks established during Sheikh Hamad's tenure.

As government offices close and public operations pause, the mourning period serves as a public acknowledgement of the structural shifts that occurred under his rule. The modern iteration of the Qatari state remains closely tied to the domestic and international policies initiated during his time as Emir.
