The structural instability of a tower undergoing an office-to-residential conversion has triggered massive evacuations and street closures in New York City.

A high-rise in Midtown Manhattan has been evacuated after columns buckled and floors sagged, prompting widespread fears of a potential collapse. Emergency services responded to 235 East 42nd Street around 8 a.m. on Tuesday following initial reports of falling bricks, subsequently uncovering severe structural issues between the 21st and 26th stories of the tower.

The 37-story building, which formerly served as Pfizer's corporate headquarters, is currently undergoing one of the largest office-to-residential conversions in New York City history. The ongoing structural failure highlights the extreme dangers and unpredictable engineering risks inherent in large-scale urban repurposing projects.

The instability has prompted a massive city-wide safety response and significant disruption across Midtown. Multiple adjacent structures have been cleared as a precaution, including a Hampton Inn and a nearby school containing approximately 400 children. Authorities have established a rigid "frozen zone" halting all pedestrian and vehicular traffic from 40th to 45th Streets between First and Third Avenues.

Officials warn that the situation remains fluid and highly dangerous. FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito stated that specialized tools monitoring the structure show "continual movement," indicating the building is not yet stable. Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the incident as an "extremely serious" and "fast-developing situation," with structural assessments taking place minute by minute.

Approximately 150 fire and emergency medical personnel are currently deployed at the site. First responders are utilizing drones to assess the exterior and safely monitor the shifting structure as city engineers determine the immediate next steps to secure the surrounding area.
