Mexico defeats Ecuador 2-0 to advance to World Cup Round of 16
The co-hosts secured their first knockout stage victory since 1986 following a weather-delayed match at Estadio Azteca.

Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday evening at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, securing the national team's first knockout stage victory in the tournament since 1986.
The match was initially delayed for an hour due to a severe thunderstorm over the stadium. Upon kickoff, Mexico established early control of the game. Forward Julián Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, and striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead shortly after with a second goal in the 31st minute.
Ecuador struggled to recover from the first-half deficit and ultimately finished the match with ten men. Defender Piero Hincapié received a red card in stoppage time for covering his mouth during an exchange with an opponent, a violation of a newly enforced FIFA rule.
The result breaks a 40-year drought for the Mexican national team in World Cup knockout rounds, marking a significant advancement for the co-hosts on home soil and concluding decades of early tournament exits.
Mexico will now advance to the Round of 16. They are scheduled to face the winner of the upcoming match between England and the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, July 5, at Mexico City Stadium.
