The quadruple Olympic champion has pulled out of the remainder of the Saint-Étienne meet as a precautionary measure ahead of the European Championships.

Léon Marchand has withdrawn from the remainder of the 2026 French Elite Championships in Saint-Étienne. The quadruple Olympic champion exited the competition today following a right adductor injury sustained during the 200-meter breaststroke heats on Monday, June 29.

During the preliminary race, Marchand experienced sharp pain in his right adductor major. The discomfort resulted in a noticeably slower final 50 meters, culminating in a ninth-place finish that left him outside the A final. Initial medical examinations, including ultrasound and MRI scans, did not reveal major abnormalities, though a lesion is currently suspected.

He is undergoing further evaluation and medical care at the National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance (INSEP) under the supervision of the French team doctor. Medical staff have indicated that the withdrawal is a strict precautionary measure designed to prevent aggravation of the injury.

The immediate focus has shifted to his recovery for the European Championships, which begin in approximately six weeks at the Paris Aquatics Center. Marchand's participation in the continental competition is not currently in doubt, as he has already secured qualification for at least one event.

The abrupt exit stands in sharp contrast to his performance earlier in the meet. On the opening day of the championships, Marchand won the 400-meter Individual Medley with a time of 4:04.56. The finish is the fifth-fastest time in the event's history and represents his fastest performance outside of a major international championship.

Marchand's withdrawal underscores the exacting physical tolerances required in elite swimming. Even for an athlete holding multiple Olympic and world records, sustaining peak performance demands a careful and continuous calibration between competitive exertion and long-term physical well-being.
