Kjell Nilsson, actor who played Lord Humungus in 'Mad Max 2,' dies at 76
The Swedish-born actor and former Olympic-class weightlifter passed away in Australia following a battle with kidney disease.

Kjell Nilsson, the Swedish-born actor and former Olympic-class weightlifter who became a defining figure of dystopian cinema as Lord Humungus in "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior," died on July 2 in Queensland, Australia. He was 76.
Nilsson's death followed a four-year battle with end-stage kidney disease. According to an announcement from his family, he died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his sons, after deciding to cease the dialysis treatments he had been undergoing three times a week.
Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, on December 19, 1949, Nilsson initially built a career outside of film. An accomplished Olympic-class weightlifter, he relocated to Australia in 1980 with the specific intention of training athletes preparing for the Moscow Olympic Games.
His transition into acting was unanticipated, prompted by his meeting and subsequent marriage to Australian actress Kate Ferguson. Nilsson's imposing physical stature drew the attention of the film industry, leading to his casting as the primary antagonist in George Miller's 1981 sequel. Masked and physically commanding, the role cemented his place in international cinema and established an enduring archetype for the genre.
Nilsson continued to work intermittently in the industry over the following decades, with his final credited role appearing in the 2023 film "Howlin' Refrain." He leaves behind a legacy defined by one of the most recognizable, austere performances in modern science fiction.
