Egypt's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded on July 7 following a 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16. The team's elimination ends a campaign that featured notable on-field progression under head coach Hossam Hassan, while also being characterised by a series of high-profile incidents involving the 59-year-old manager.

The final match, in which Argentina overcame a two-goal deficit with a decisive strike from Enzo Fernandez, was accompanied by further tension on the touchline. During the fixture, Hassan was issued a yellow card for directing FIFA's anti-racism "X" gesture towards match officials. In his post-match remarks, the coach accused the governing body of unfair treatment, suggesting that external influences were operating to keep Argentine captain Lionel Messi in the tournament due to "marketing support." Hassan subsequently stated he would not watch the remainder of the competition.

The touchline dispute during the Round of 16 followed an earlier physical confrontation at the team's hotel. On July 4, Hassan and his twin brother, team director Ibrahim Hassan, were involved in an altercation with a Dallas police officer. The head coach later informed the press that he considered the matter resolved after accepting an apology from the local police.

Hassan's public profile during the tournament also included overt political statements. In the days preceding the match against Argentina, he delivered an address advocating for the Palestinian people, stating that anyone who does not feel for them "does not deserve to be human." He had previously displayed a Palestinian flag following Egypt's earlier victory over Australia.

Appointed by the Egyptian Football Association in February 2024, Hassan—who remains Egypt's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals—oversaw an unbeaten qualifying run that guided the national team to the knockout rounds. However, the accumulation of disputes with match officials, local law enforcement, and the tournament's governing body ultimately commanded much of the public focus, overshadowing the squad's sporting achievements on the pitch.
