Scientific analysis published in July 2026 has revealed that the meteorite which crashed through the roof of a home in Hillsborough, New Jersey, in 2024 contains a diverse array of organic compounds, including amino acids and other key prebiotic molecules. According to the international research team behind the study, the specimen—named the Hillsborough meteorite—also shows clear evidence of ancient salty liquid water, or brines, having once existed on its parent asteroid.
The meteorite is classified as a rare CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite, a pristine fragment believed to have originated from a proto-planet in the inner asteroid belt. The newly published findings indicate that its parent asteroid hosted concentrated salty fluids, a process previously unknown for this specific class of ancient celestial bodies. Researchers report that these watery environments likely facilitated the chemical reactions necessary to synthesize complex carbon-bearing compounds.
The physical recovery of the specimen was highly unusual. On July 16, 2024, a bright daytime fireball was witnessed by more than 60 observers across five northeastern states before the meteorite crashed through the roof of a residential home in Hillsborough. Because it was recovered almost immediately, the sample remained exceptionally pristine and free from terrestrial contamination, making it one of the most scientifically significant meteorites ever collected.
The presence of both liquid water activity and life's building blocks in such an undamaged sample significantly advances the scientific understanding of how prebiotic chemistry developed in the early solar system. It supports theories that early planetary bodies possessed the necessary conditions to generate organic compounds, which were subsequently delivered to Earth and other planets through cosmic impacts.
