Grand Theft Auto VI is finally real, and it’s taking the game disc down with it

Pre-orders are live, the November 19 launch is set, and the biggest entertainment release of the decade is arriving without a physical disc in sight. I couldn't be more ready.

Look, I have been hurt before. We all have. After two agonizing delays, the idea of actually playing Grand Theft Auto VI felt less like an upcoming event and more like a collective gaming myth. But as of June 25, the impossible happened: the pre-order buttons went live globally. It is real. We are actually, genuinely going back to Vice City on November 19, 2026. The long, parched drought is finally over.

But buried in the absolute euphoria of putting down money for the $79.99 Standard Edition or the $99.99 Ultimate Edition is a massive, industry-shifting detail. Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI is, for all intents and purposes, a digital-only release. Yes, you can still buy a plastic box at your local shop, but crack it open and you will not find a Blu-ray waiting for you. Just a slip of paper with a download code. There is no disc version coming at launch, and seemingly no plans for one ever.

A decade ago, this would have sparked a riot. For the biggest entertainment property on the planet to simply bypass the disc drive is the final, definitive death knell for physical media in blockbuster gaming. But honestly? I am too thrilled to care. The reality of modern massive open-world games means the physical disc was just an installer anyway. What I actually care about is that pre-loading starts on November 12. We get a whole glorious week to download whatever monstrous file size this beautifully rendered, neon-drenched mayhem requires before the servers inevitably get hammered on launch day.

If you secure a digital copy before November 20, they are throwing in a Vintage Vice City Pack and a month of GTA+, which is exactly the kind of nostalgic bait I am perfectly happy to fall for. We are looking down the barrel of a generational cultural moment. For the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players — PC folks, stay strong, your time will come later — the finish line is in sight. The game discs might be gone forever, but Vice City is waiting. Let the countdown to November begin.
