Lawmakers have formally approved a procedural probe to examine the European political party affiliated with the German faction.

The European Parliament has voted in favour of launching a formal investigation procedure against Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN), the European political party founded by Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD). The Tuesday vote authorises the European Union's political watchdog to examine the party's operations and its compliance with the bloc's founding values.

The decision advances a procedural review that was initially set in motion in late May by the Authority for European Political Parties and European Political Foundations (APPF). The mandate allows the APPF to formally scrutinise the political family's internal dynamics, structural affiliations, and broader conduct. The investigation is directed exclusively at the pan-European party entity, which operates under a separate legal status from the ESN parliamentary group within the legislative body.

The ongoing probe highlights deepening concerns among European officials regarding extremist infiltration within cross-border factions. Lawmakers have cited the potential for such affiliations to reshape German political discourse and alter the legislative environment in Brussels as a primary driver for the formal inquiry.

If the APPF concludes that the party is in serious and persistent breach of the EU's values—including human dignity, freedom, and the rule of law—ESN could lose its official registration and access to millions of euros in annual EU subsidies. The political family will remain under active administrative scrutiny as the procedural steps mandated by the vote are established.
