The British Medical Association has announced that its members voted to accept a new government offer, concluding an industrial dispute that began in March 2023.

Resident doctors in England are officially ending their ongoing strike action after voting to accept a new government deal on pay and working conditions. The resolution brings a close to a prolonged period of industrial action within the National Health Service that has been underway for more than three years.

The British Medical Association announced the results of the ballot on June 29. According to the union, 53 percent of its eligible members voted in favour of the government package. The vote saw a turnout of 57 percent, with 32,932 doctors participating in the decision.

The accepted offer includes an average 6.6 percent pay uplift, which is scheduled to be fully implemented by April 2027. According to figures provided by the Department of Health and Social Care, the compounding effect of this agreement means that resident doctors' pay will be 35.2 percent higher on average compared to levels from four years ago.

The industrial dispute began in March 2023, driven by disagreements over pay restoration and working environments. Intermittent strike action over the intervening period disrupted routine NHS services and appointment scheduling, as consecutive government negotiating teams and the BMA worked to reach a consensus on baseline compensation.

The ratification of the deal establishes a new framework for medical staffing across the country. By securing the targeted pay increases and formally ceasing strike action, the agreement signals a shift toward operational stability for the health service as administrators address ongoing capacity requirements.
