All Wellington club rugby cancelled as referees withdraw over ongoing abuse
Regional matches for the upcoming weekend have been halted after the referees' association reported 19 incidents of abuse this season.

All Wellington club rugby matches scheduled for the coming weekend have been cancelled following a mass withdrawal of referees over escalating sideline and on-field abuse. The shutdown halts all scheduled fixtures across the region for the weekend of July 10-12.
The Wellington Rugby Referees Association (WRRA) initiated the withdrawal after three new incidents of referee mistreatment were recorded during matches on the preceding Saturday. According to the association's reporting, these latest altercations bring the total number of documented abuse cases to 19 for the current season.
The Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU) has confirmed the complete suspension of play. In addressing the crisis, the union stated that the decision to halt the competition received unanimous backing from all constituent club chairs, establishing a unified front among local administrators.
Officials have emphasised that the shutdown is rooted in a strict zero-tolerance policy toward the mistreatment of referees. The union and participating clubs are now tasked with addressing the volatile environment that led to the mass withdrawal of essential match personnel.
The cancellation of the regional fixtures highlights a severe and pervasive issue with conduct within the local game. The withdrawal of officiating services serves as a mandate for the WRFU and constituent clubs to implement immediate, comprehensive interventions to protect officials and reform match-day culture before competition can resume.
